AT PRESENT HYDRANGEAS ARE... |
1. Showing their autumn tones.
2. Starting to defoliate.
3. Leaves falling from plants may show signs of mildew from previous humid
weather and leaf spot but is generally not worth controlling as these will
not drop off. |
NOW IS THE BEST TIME TO PRUNE |
1. Flower buds are easily seen.
2. Prune above 2 pairs of plump buds.
3. Removing old woody stems may be necessary from time to time but flowering
will be reduced in the next season.
4. Not pruning will lead to large plants with small flowers.
5. Prune to shape. |

COLOURING |
1. New cultivars are more stable and colouring will enhance flower colour.
2. White hydrangeas don't require any treatment, as they are stable and not
affected by the soil pH. |
BLUE-ING
|
1. Use the blue-ing powder, which can be mixed with water and applied by
watering can OR Iron sulphate or Aluminium sulphate mixed in water or
sprinkle a small handful around each plant and water in thoroughly.
2. Mulching with organic material.
3. Three applications required, of either of the above every three weeks
commencing in July. |

Sprinkle a handful of lime around each mature plant - three applications
three weeks apart commencing in July OR Condys crystals. |
FERTILISE |
August/September apply generous amount of general purpose
fertiliser away from stem, with addition of organic matter and mulch. |
